Zero stars, but that's not an option. The fact that this agency even has the word "health" in its name is false advertising. When I went in for my second parental shaming session for making choices that only parents should be making for their children, the level of propaganda and shame that was thwarted on me was inconceivable. The nurse who is required to conduct such meetings with parents rolled her eyes at me when I asked how many data sheets they give out on Vitamin A supplementation and how it can reduce measles deaths by 80%. Apparently, health department staff is not trained on nutraceutical therapies, I suspect because there is not a lobby for vitamins and the vitamin industry is not indemnified from legal recourse should one of their products cause harm to someone taking them. The fact that we live in a culture that has normalized government overreach and parental shaming for making their own informed choices is incomprehensible. Even if there are not specific guidelines in place requiring professional conduct, these are grown adults working for this agency who know better. I do want to commend the BCHD on one thing... the breastfeeding display in the waiting area is well done, however, it is about 50 years late to the game. While public health agencies and doctors offices were touting formula as far superior to breast milk for decades because there were financial incentives to do so, parents who did their own research and did not outsource their own decision making for their families have continued to make choices including breast over formula feeding while the health departments caught up. History continues to point to a latency in public health policy. It happened with breastfeeding, it happened with cigarette smoking, it happened with the opioid crisis, and it has happened with countless pharmaceuticals and medical device products. Our children will not be the consequences of these financially incentivized agencies to continue to act as the agents of for profit, indemnified corporations that have zero connection or stake in our families well being.

Took my youngest here for her hearing and vision tests for school. They were very well organized and helpful through the entire process. They were also kind to my kids, which speaks volumes. We also signed up to get COVID vaccines here which was easy to do online. They sent friendly reminders about the appointment and had knowledgeable staff to answer any questions I had. Then they surprised me by asking my kids if they had questions about this vaccine and explained to them in easy terms what it was all about. Definitely grateful to have such a supportive Health Department in our county!

This place used to be very helpful. Do to lack of resources it's becoming a waste of time though. I've been sent home twice with no treatment.

Yesterday I had by far the worst experience I have ever had in a “medical facility”. I want to start with I’m on warfarin and I’ve been getting Depo for years, so I don’t have a period. My periods were heavy and out of control before blood thinners, I’ve never had a period on depo, I’ve always been too afraid of losing too much blood… Last week the place where I get my depo told me that because I just got taken off my mom’s insurance and I only have state insurance, they couldn’t see me. I made an appointment for a depo here, came over an hour from my home for said shot she refused to give me. She informed me I was a special case and she was not a doctor and her hirer up was not even there to help her make the right decision… So does the health department not have doctors? How is this lady making decisions without a doctor's judgment is behind her? I have a blood clotting disorder and depo interfers with warfarin. Though I’ve taken depo for 2-3 years by this time. Most medication interfere with warfarin…. I was on depo before starting the warfarin, they test my blood consistency once a week and they adjust my dose of warfarin around my blood consistency. My blood doctor has known I’ve been on depo for years and it’s been fine. The nurse practitioner here looked me in the eyes and told me she couldnt bear making the wrong decision because I could die from a clot or a stroke. The indecision of your choice could also make me bleed to death. This is just unacceptable …. She even stated my gynecologist has licenses she doesn’t have, so she didn’t feel comfortable continuing their care… if my old gynecologist is more trained and they have let me for years, you would think since they are doctors they know what they are doing…

A thankful acknowledgement to Jasmine, the car seat specialist at BCHD - Due to some arthritis and loss of grip strength, installing car seats correctly is a challenge. If you have any doubt about the secure installation of a car seat, make an appointment. It is worth the peace of mind that you are doing everything to keep your kids, grandkids, and other young passengers safe.
