I moved to Iowa last year at 27. I had a perfect record for the first 27 years of my life. I have never been in a courthouse more than I have when I literally worked having to go to a courthouse five days a week and I literally was doing the same things I always did living in Illinois and following laws. When you go in, they’ll tell you you have to consult a lawyer for basic questions when I barely have the income to survive and make little enough to qualify for a public defender. On top of that, their officers pressed unjustified charges on my husband over things they had absolutely no business in and we spent MONTHS fighting it JUST SO HE COULD COME HOME, effectively leaving him homeless all that time. Now he has a record too when he had absolutely nothing up until that point as well. Staff is rude on top of it. I can’t even imagine what these people are doing to people of color around here.

If you’re a person of a darker decent I would suggest you leave this town/county. Never have I ever been in a city and made a complaint against an officer and ended up with a warrant for my arrest after. I highly suggest if you can’t afford a lawyer leave. This town believes everyone here that’s of color is up to some illegal activity. I see where the smallest racist town speculation come from now. I know of 2 incidents where my white friend was offered sassy on an hard drug but my color friend was charged and given 15 days. Ive had a public defender here in Iowa and from the horses mouth “it’s simply because your black” I’ve found it amazing that the GOVERNMENT appointed attorney told me this. Dubuque iowa is just another beast that you have to be willing to fight or bow down to if you can’t afford the fight. Its just a lot that Dubuque does wrong without a fix or care but want the community to care about one another.
