I would leave a negative star review if I could ! The woman I spoke to on the phone was rude, condescending and disrespectful. Rising her voice and cutting me off while I was trying to explain why I was calling. I literally had to yell “okay ma’am” just to get her to stop yelling at me long enough to let her know I was done with being yelled at and to hang up. It was sickening how hateful she was and if she treats people like that she needs to find a new profession NOT WORKING WITH THE PUBLIC

This review is specifically for the Circuit Clerk office and does not reflect any of the other offices or positions in the County Courthouse Building. I was brought to this office for a name change (marriage). One lady was very unpleasant to work with, this lady tried to tell me my address was Brooke County, I bought my house 6 years ago, paid taxes and voted. I know what county I live in. I could tell right away she didn’t want to help me. She gave my papers to another lady (much nicer!) and proceeded to leave the office. After my 3rd trip there, they sent me to the Weirton daily times for publication (a step needed to finalize the name change) The Weirton daily times said they don’t do that anymore and that office keeps sending people to them. Complete mess of a process. I’m sure other states handle this process much more efficiently. Hancock county and I’m sure most of WV is extremely outdated with their processes and methods.

Had a great experience at the tax office renewing my car registration. It was so easy and saved me a trip to the DMV. But, I think the entrances to the building need to be clearly marked as public entrances. When the courthouse was under refurbishment, the entrance was in the front---on the cliff side---whereas it had been on the side of the building before that. Now, the side entrance is open again to the public but I don't know if the front entrance is. So, when I went down there, I just haphazardly chose an entrance. There needs to be markings for public entrances.

The security guards were friendly and professional, the tax assessors office was great. I called after hours and left a message, They actually returned my call within 15 minutes of opening, handled my issue quickly and made sure I understood what I needed to while I was there. Better experience then I expected.

Melissa from the tax office has no business dealing with the public. She was an ill informed, dísmissive, interrupting shrew. When I asked why she was being so rude, her answer was because you are not listening. She made no sense and could not provide me an actual date when my taxes were received. When I further pointed out an error on the the letter I received, her response was, well we are not perfect ... that we agree on. Just because you try to shout someone down does not make you right it shows your ignorance. When a citizen calls with a legitimate question about taxes not being received after 16 days, and only then receives the "returned" payment from the tax office, blaming the mail is highly questionable and a lazy blanket covered answer by Melissa. Have a cup of coffee next time before addressing what you are paid to do.
