On a quiet visit to the Labette County Courthouse in Oswego, the 1948 Art Deco building immediately reads as a mid-century statement piece, all clean concrete lines and purposeful symmetry. Its exterior carries the carved words "Equality" and "Justice" along with a listing of the county's original settlements, giving the structure a civic gravitas that feels very much of its era. Labette County was formed in 1867 and it takes its name from LaBette Creek, itself named for French-Canadian trapper Pierre LaBette. Oswego has always been the county seat, and the city's name traces back to Oswego New York. Unlike some other courthouses, this one is not at the very center of town with the streets all around. But that means there's plenty of parking and it was an easy stop today.
