My father passed away in 2020 during the beginning of Covid. I live in another state. I haven't worked since 2018 and have only recently been approved for disability. My father didn't have a will. When the hospice nurse called me and told me he passed she gave me the contact information for the place that was going to cremate him. At that time I was living off of long term disability and my 401k until it used up. I paid for my father's cremation. I reached out to social security and his bank and told them he passed away. I asked the bank if my father had a balance how do I claim it. They told me I had to deal with Probate. They wanted proof I paid for his cremation and I gave it. They said because the difference was a few hundred dollars that I had to go through the ridiculous process of filling out a form that was basically a booklet AND I had to have someone in the state of Ohio basically be a middle man for me to be allowed to go through the process to claim his funds. I'm not close to my father's side of my family. I had no one to ask to do that. The forms they sent me had places this middle man person was supposed to fill out. I gave up and was never able to claim my father's funds. I showed them proof that I paid for his service and I could have easily sent them a copy of my birth certificate showing that he was my father but NOOOOO! They have a ridiculously hard process to pretty much make it impossible to claim the funds and keep it for themselves. That was a really difficult time in my life dealing with my disability, trying to maintain and not end up homeless, help support my family of 5, dealing with my father passing away in another state and I couldn't travel and also paying for his service. I had no help to pay that. He was my father and I manned up and did what was necessary. I could've ignored that and not claimed that cost but he was my father so I took care of it. This probate court took an opportunity and stole my Dad's money. The government is not about fairness and helping people. They vampire off of people! It's shameful! I know my Dad should've had a will but I had the receipt from his service that proves I paid it in full and I could've gave them my birth certificate. No other proof should've been necessary! 5 yrs later I'm still disgusted!
