I filed two separate complaints with the Department of Health regarding the neglect and unsafe conditions at Abbeyville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lancaster County. While both complaints were “investigated,” nothing was ever resolved. I don’t understand how it can be considered acceptable or “safe” for a licensed facility to have mice and visible mice droppings where residents live and eat. My mother also suffered from multiple infections while residing in this facility, and despite my reports, the conditions remained the same. The investigations may have caused the nursing home to temporarily clean her room, but that was the extent of the action taken. The neglect continued, and my mother ultimately lost her life after only five months in that facility. Neither the Department of Health nor the Office of Aging provided the protection or accountability my mother desperately needed. The system failed her — and it should never
