I'm sure there are many other good things about Watertown, love the neighborhood, location, library, food etc. But as a new resident who moved in 8 months ago, have been really frustrated with the town hall recently. First of all, we are installing solar panels to cut down our carbon footprint, and it's been having trouble to start the program because the new electrical inspector misinterpreted the code and refused to sign the approval so my contractor had to bring this to the court. And we recently got our first real estate tax bill says we have to pay the amount by which day otherwise it's 14% interest, so I paid because when I get to online the twonhall system still shows I owe that much money("delay" that's what they said), then I found out that my bank already paid for it through escrow more than two weeks ago. So I started my endless road of asking for refund. Called them first, not so clear what they need to process it, but I did my best to collect what I have and brought it over the office, the woman who received me was kind of rude with a condescending tone and made her own assumption and probably didn't even look at my documents and sent me away. So I spent hours calling banks again and found out her assumption was wrong so I called townhall again, she didn't even apologize! Then I came in again next day and this time she asked for a bank statement with that transaction so she can see my name on it, I told her that's recent activity so it's going to take a while, but I have transaction details with my name(she clearly didn't even look at it), then she said she needs my address on that too, I told her I can show her my ID and other documents that show my address, REFUSED. Then before I left I asked them if they can put a small line like "please check with your bank if this has been paid before you make any payment" to help future new home owners, she's like no way, it's not their responsibility to remind the residents, everybody should know that. Well guess what, me and people around me didn't know, and even we did know, with this letter from government, and saying 14% interest after due date we probably would still have paid for it right away in case our Bank missed it. Super disappointing. We are paying a lot property tax here and I expect so much better in Watertown.

I was out of town when I received my excise tax bill for my car. In about a month and a half, I got additional interest, demand, warrant charges, which nearly doubled the bill. I tried to call the office to see if there was an appeal system or something but there was nothing that could be done. I’ve been living in Watertown for many years now and I love the city but I wished they were as prompt at fixing the potholes as they are at charging taxes on top of taxes.
