Privacy equals freedom is full of it. There is no such sign at the register deeds office. There is an employees only sign. Stephanie Norman is the most integrity driven person I’ve ever met in my life. She is kind and treats everyone with respect. She has always treated me and my wife with kindness and was so helpful in helping us get our marriage license and she goes out of her way to host veteran events and personalized weddings. The paying customers only policy with her bathroom applies to most general businesses not just the register of deeds office. Most businesses don’t just let people in to use the bathroom period, let alone someone who is not contributing to the business. For example G2k when it was in business didn’t allow the public to use restrooms. Being a tax payer is required by law. It doesn’t make you a special person that can libelously and maliciously make an ignorant comment that is simply not true or accurate. If you payed attention at all during the pandemic most government officials not just her advised people that if you could stay home to prevent the spread of a disease that has killed over 500,000 people in the states alone, then to do it. There is no one more qualified or better suited to be our register of deeds than Stephanie Norman. She has my vote until the day she retires.

Went in there today to get mine and my fiances wedding license and one of the ladies was so disrespectful. Yelled at us because my fiance didn’t have her social security card but would’ve been able to provide the number. If we didn’t have to have it in Burke county we would not be back. You do not treat people in the public like that. I’d give 0 stars if I could. This lady needs to get a job that doesn’t deal with the public. Talked to us as if we were stupid.

Oh boy, where do I begin. First off, I had originally found my numerous telephonic communications with this office to be very kind and helpful. A little background, my siblings and I are heirs to my Grandfather's real property located in the county, that passed to us via his will. As a student of law, I wanted to make sure that the documents in North Carolina are recorded to present clear chain of title, seeing as North Carolina is one of the few states in country that still follows a "Race" recording statute. The best document you can have is a DEED - which is intuitive enough - My siblings all live in different different states, and some of us don't really talk so it is not easy to get everyone together to agree to sign a deed reflecting our present ownership interest for recording and notice purposes. Anyways, throughout my numerous telephonic phone calls - at least two of which was with the Commissioner, Stephanie Norman, I was informed that in absence of an actual Deed, I could type up a Real Property Abstract outlining the location of the property, as well as the history of ownership, starting with my grandfather all the way down to my siblings and I, per the terms of his will that is located right next door to the Register of Deeds. As someone who lives four hours away on the other side of the state of NC, I made plans to drive all the way to the register of deeds, after having followed the instructions by the Office's directions regarding the Real Property Abstract. Having arrived, I was initially greeted with respect from the office staff and our initial conversation was respectful, but then came out the commissioner herself. From the very beginning, she approached me with a very demeaning, self-entitled attitude, telling me how wrong I was to try and file the documents that she herself and her office told me I could a couple weeks prior. When I tried to explain to her exactly what I was told by her office, she very rudely interrupted me and told me that I was wrong, and that no one in her office would dare make such suggestions as if she is an all knowing God who is infallible in every regard. I politely, but firmly, informed her that her office did in-fact make those suggestions to me. She then threw the paper back at me, called me a liar again to my face, and then proceeded to walk away and tell me that she was not going to assist me. At this point I am pissed! It appears that the commissioner forgets that as an elected official, she works for the tax payer and not the other way around! If she can't learn to check her nasty attitude at the door when dealing with people of the county, then she needs to find another job!

Today I was recording a deed for land I purchased. Everyone I interacted with was so helpful and polite as I was navigating this process. I really appreciate the way this office operates. Thanks again!

Stephanie Norman is doing a great job over there. People were friendly, service was fast. Not what you would expect from a typical government service center.
