I called the Clerk’s office today to get information on a birth certificate and they were so helpful. They ended up making copies of it for me.(there was a fee of course) Thanks for your help Pam Powers and staff!! It’s always nice to be greeted with a smile!

Appalling. My partner of 14 years and I went here to get married and were forced to leave without the certificate, staff essentially told us to educate ourselves more before considering something as "legally binding" as marriage. We had general questions and the town hall officials treated us with sheer disrespect. We also had specific questions regarding marriage certificate application and they told us to research and condescendingly said that the marriage certificate was "an official document," as if we didnt know. As a gender nonconforming person, i had questions regarding the legal name change that comes with marriage and town hall staff gave us INACCURATE information (explicitly lied and said the new married surname had to be one of our legal surnames- FALSE, it can be any combination of legal surnames or whatever you choose). When I explained my status as a gender nonconforming person, they laughed and said it was all too confusing. They wouldn't let us take the form home and acted like we were small children who had just started dating. It was disgraceful and really tarnished our special day. Some sensitivity and diversity training would do your inept and rude staff well... but I guess you really shouldn't expect much anyway from small time townies who get off power tripping from their positions of meager power. We literally left, after essentially being kicked out of the office, and went to Haydenville, where Brenda treated us with utmost respect and compassion- she kindly and calmly answered all of our questions, shared our excitement and respected us as a couple and individuals. The cost is also cheaper by $5-10 in Williamsburg and we were able to compete the marriage certificate with ease, and our 14 year relationship became official 3 days later (after completing an intimate ceremony with a local justice of the peace). Thanks for nothing, Northampton town hall.... just one more road block to solidifying the connection my partner and I have had since day one. Shame on you for not giving equal respect to love across the board, you all should seriously be ashamed of yourselves- its 2019 and you supposedly live in the east coast's lesbian hub, such intolerance and lack of awareness is UNACCEPTABLE!

We got our marriage license there and 17 years later still married. Worked out fine.
