  Hartford City Hall is one of the most beautiful and historic engagement photo locations in Connecticut. With its grand marble staircases, ornate architectural details, and dramatic green tinted glass ceiling, it offers a timeless and elegant setting for couples looking to capture stunning engagement portraits. The natural light that filters through the glass ceiling gives the space a soft, romantic glow that enhances every photo. The building’s classic Beaux-Arts design provides an ideal backdrop for both wide, sweeping shots and more intimate, close-up moments. Every angle inside Hartford City Hall offers something unique—from intricate railings to graceful archways—which makes it a favorite among wedding photographers and couples alike. One very important detail to keep in mind when planning your engagement session is that photo shoots at Hartford City Hall are only allowed after regular business hours and do book up quickly. There is a $50 rental fee for engagement sessions and will require a permit. Be sure to plan accordingly, especially if you're hoping to capture that magical natural light through the ceiling. Also note that Hartford City Hall does not have air conditioning. If you're considering a summer session or wedding, be prepared for warm temperatures inside the building. It can get quite hot during the warmer months, so dress accordingly and consider cooler seasons if comfort is a priority. Another great benefit of choosing Hartford City Hall is its proximity to the Goodwin Hotel, just a short walk away. The Goodwin’s elegant bar area provides the perfect contrast to the classic City Hall setting.   In 2025, City Hall is still a great place for wedding-related portraits. Here's my original review: One of Connecticut's most beautiful buildings! I'm a wedding photographer and recently visited with one of my couples for their engagement session. It was a great time! Note that to visit for a photo session, you need a permit. The security staff run a pretty good show: sessions start and end pretty promptly in order to keep things moving. Parking is easy on Sundays...there's plenty of on-street spots on the building's block. Highly recommended!

  The building is amazing!!! I would definitely recommend this place for weddings. My only issue was the security guard that was there. My photographer got there early, as we were supposed to do the first hour of pictures outside and the the second hour from 7-8p in the building after my ceremony. There was some kind of miscommunication and my photographer gave security the wrong info prior to my arrival. Once I got there, the security guard just said we could go up. No other questions or anything. So, I thought she was just being nice letting us go up early. So once we were upstairs, about 10-15 mins later the same girl ask for the permit and I showed it to her. She said we had to leave the building bc our permit starts at 7p. Which was not a problem. We left and did pictures outside. It then started raining and pouring so we went back to the lobby so I didn’t get drenched. Not to take pictures. The security guard comes to tell us we can’t stay in the lobby we have to leave. I said it’s raining outside. I’m in a long white dress and she is still saying leave. So we then go outside. She comes outside and tells us we have to leave the building. We respond that we are outside (there is a covering in the outside). She says it’s apart of the building. She was a bit nasty and rude so this is where the issue started for me. No compassion whatsoever. I respond, I have on a long white wedding dress I can’t just stand in the rain. She says go wait in your car. But our car was on the other side of that building so I asked if the car could be brought over then I can go. She says fine. My husband left to get the car. She must’ve called someone and goes “Oh I just wanted to tell you something”. She goes in the building to talk. Then comes back still on the phone and is saying “yea, I told them twice. I just wanted to make sure I let you know.” But I’m sure she left out the part that she never asked to see our permit prior to just saying go upstairs bc ppl always give half truths to make themselves look good. It’s not what you say but how you say things. If you’re having a bad day, don’t take it out on people. Use your PTO. We need more people to have better attitudes and more compassion. Get a new job if you hate the one you have. But don’t treat people poorly that are coming to your establishment to enjoy the best day of their lives. Spreading love is so much easier and it feels better. Other than that, my experience was great and the building is beautiful

  Hartford City Hall is one of Connecticut’s most iconic architectural landmarks. The historic building features stunning marble staircases, beautiful natural light, and incredible craftsmanship that make it stand out from anything else in the area. As a photographer, it’s one of my favorite locations in downtown Hartford because every corner offers a unique backdrop. Whether you’re visiting for an event, a tour, or simply to admire the architecture, Hartford City Hall is absolutely worth seeing.
