Frederick Douglas' statue is here. Great little place to sit and enjoy your coffee or light lunch. Reminds me of veterans park in Bethesda MD.

Frederick Douglas was born here, as were many black Americans. After the transatlantic slave trade was banned, those who were already enslaved were bred for the purpose of continuing to feed a demand for human labor. Human beings were bought and sold on the steps of this courthouse. Frederick Douglass was jailed nearby for attempting to escape in 1836. He was caught by the father-in-law of his owner, Aaron Anthony. In 1878, Douglass returned and spoke on these very steps. Visit his birthplace while you’re here!!! Covey’s Landing is very near the anthony farm where he was born. Also, Harriet Tubman was born in Maryland, and she was “Moses” on the Underground Railroad to those seeking freedom. Her museum is nearby!
